Mindfulness as Miracle

Ever seen images of someone selling a miracle tonic, guaranteed to increase happiness, health, and even hair? Mindfulness may seem like a miracle practice. Most of the research on it has focused on depression and anxiety. Meta-analyses—“mega-analyses” that analyze results from hundreds to thousands of subjects—show that mindfulness-based therapies decrease anxiety, depression, and physical pain and disability (e.g., Gotink et al. 2015) as well as prevent relapses of depression for those with a history of recurrent depression (Kuyken et al. 2016). But there’s more to the reason we ask you to try mindfulness practice.

Research suggests that mindfulness thickens (or prevents age-related thinning of) brain areas largely responsible for attention, learning and memory, emotional flexibility, and empathy (e.g., Lazar et al. 2005; Hölzel et al. 2011). Practices such as mindfulness meditation may be a fountain of youth for our brains, albeit one we have to visit again and again (see text box).
